TREKKING
IN THE DOLPO
The land of Dolpo situated in far west Nepal on the edge of Tibetan plateau
is probably the last enclave of pure Tibetan culture left. The beauty of
Phoksumdo Lake has been captured in the feature film Caravan.
Endangered species like Snow Leopard live here. As the Tibetan people continue
to live there and carry on their cultivation, domestication and trade, they
have managed to preserve many of their fascinating monasteries. There are
spectacular landscapes, unique Tibetan and Bon villages.
The Upper part of Dolpo is more hidden from civilizations and has preserved
cultures still more in tact. The entire district was closed of to foreigners
until 1989, when southern parts of Dolpo was opened to organized trekking
groups. The upper part is still restricted and needs a special trekking
permit.
