TREKKING
IN THE KANCHENJUNGA
While the accounts of numerous explores to the Dolpo
and Mustang regions of Nepal have offered great excitement for trekkers
to explore those areas, Kanchenjunga (8598 mts) on the Nepal-Sikkim border
is more of a mystery.
Kanchenjunga
is certainly the richest area of the Nepal Himalayas for ecological diversity.
The steep, heavily wooded valleys offer an ideal habitat for a wide variety
of plant, wild animals and birds. Excellent views of Everest, Makalu and
of course Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world highlights
photographic opportunities. The area offers more authentic wilderness than
other areas of Nepal because of its rugged terrain that limits human dwelling.
More than 30 species of rhododendrons bloom on the hillsides in spring.
This attracts more sunbirds than can be found anywhere else in the country.
The inhabitants are primarily Rais, Limbus, Sherpas, and Bhotias in the
middle and higher hills, Gurungs, Magars, Tamangs, Chettris, and Brahmins
live in lower clustered communities that have been more developed. This
area receives more rainfall on average than other parts of Nepal.
